Really impressive "macro" shots taken with this camera. I'm currently looking into the possibility of purchasing a Canon powershot SX1 IS, but really want to know what it can do when zoomed in at, say 300mm or more, in order to assess the picture quality. Do you have some pictures taken zoomed in like that so that I could see them - or maybe you can give me some advice?

I'm too physically weak to go on handling an SLR digital camera, so I'm looking for the best, lighter alternatives. I look forward to hearing from you :)

before all thanks for the comment.

The macros in this camera handles pretty well and the zoom is also good but the more zoom the bigger the quality loss but in 300mm quality is just fine above 400mm starts to be just a bit more noticeable but losses more when in digital zoom of coarse.
If you want a camera with HD video is a good buy.
But if you want a superior quality in stills go for a DSLR, I am thinking on buying DSLR myself.
Canon SX1IS is an awesome camera the problem is because of the big lens that retracts to inside the body the camera censor have to be small resulting in pour ISO.

Thanks for all that info about the SX1 IS.

In fact I tried one out for a weekend, but compared to the quality of finished result that I'm used to, both from my Canon EOS 400D and also my Canon Powershot G10 (which also shoots RAW), I just couldn't feel happy with it, although close-up photography was good.

I took it back to the shop with my verdict, and they agreed that the G10's lens is far superior to that of the SX range of cameras (pity they hadn't told me!!). It's a shame because I really wanted a better range, whereas the two cameras I use both have 17-85mm zoom! I went ahead and exchanged the SX1 for a Sigma 18-200mm lens and some other accessories, which I've kept - can't go on taking things back!!! Trouble with that is that it's heavier than ever for me to use, but at least I can get some fairly good 200mm shots with it. I shall persevere a little longer with my EOS as I'm very reluctant to give in and no longer have it, but I think the time will come when all my photography will be done with my G10 because I find the weight of it so much better for me most of the time. This means I have to monitor what type of photography I actually do with each camera, as the G10 gives excellent quality for many things, but not everything.

Thanks so much for adding me to your :+devwatch:, I appreciate it :)

Really quite an impressive video - did you use digital zoom? The camera obviously has its good points as well as the not so good.

What's the music you're playing with that video of the swallow? I love it!

Yeah I used digital zoom, 20x is the max optical zoom, 40x was with 2x digital zoom but still with good quality because the video have lower resolution than a photo and 80x zoom was with 4x digital and the quality was pour here but still not very bad.
The music is from a album I got in some store, let me see if I remember,Album nameis Music for Wellness, CD 5-Ayurveda, music House of Tea and the compositor is Jean-Paul Genré.
